My personal priority is to invest in quality workmanship. W i t h considered, creative forethought, detailing by an architect or designer, and construction by a contractor who cares about getting the job done well, any project can look like a million bucks—even if it doesn't cost it. Whether you're embarking on a fullscale or small-scale remodeling, this issue has oodles of design ideas you can borrow and adapt for your own home. From the practical—unexpected places for electrical outlets, toekick storage, bath sinks at a height that works for you (rather than what's easy for Joe the Plumber to install)—to the inspired nourish, I hope we help you find your ultimate kitchen or bath. The clean lines and repeating shapes are a study in geometry. W i t h its interplay of cool gray and silver tones, this kitchen stays on the right side of the line between sleekly modern and overly austere. O AIM HIGH Shelves above the range hood repurpose a space that o t h e r w i s e w o u l d n ' t have one. Still, a solid piece of shelving w o u l d be too distracting here. Wire shelves are airier and m o r e in line w i t h the overall aesthetic. O COLOR PLAY Gray accents in an allgray space would seem institutionally stark. Contrasting dark cabinet fronts w i t h w h i t e sides and toekick adds a jolt of visual energy. Pastel pottery in organic shapes adds a hint of color w i t h o u t popping too much against the muted palette. 0 REPEAT THAT Why hide a gleaming collection of cookware behind closed doors, especially when open storage under the cooktop puts pots and pans w i t h i n easy reach. The metal shelves echo those above the range hood. © ON TAP A gooseneck faucet adds an extra few inches of vertical cleaning space—big p o t s clear the spout, no problem. T h e overall design puts everything in easy reach. A few thoughtful touches, however, pack this compact space with useful features. © GATHER ROUND Transforming an island edge from straight to curved makes it longer, which lets more guests belly up to it. In addition, the bowed side of this island is cantilevered, which gives more legroom underneath and more serving area on top. © FILLING STATION © VARIETY SHOW A mixture of storage options relieves visual tedium and provides practical benefits. To avoid constant opening and closing of cabinets, frequently used cookware sits on open shelves, and dishes are in glassdoor cabinets for easy access. The pot filler faucet is so dubbed because it eliminates the drudgery of sloshing gallons of water from sink to stove. And if a recipe calls for adding just a little water (perhaps for deglazing a pan) you're all set, without having to move a step. © FIND THE POWER This kitchen is nicely set up for one cook. One of the Most Memorable Aspects of European Travel Right in Your Own Home! 1 —J ll \ JLJ j * i * Whether you would like to add radiant heat to your bathroom or simply wrap yourself in the luxury of a warm towel, Runtal towel radiators are the answer. Originating in Europe and manufactured in America for twenty years, Runtal towel radiators are considered an essential in fine bathroom design. As a Bathroom Heater: Runtal towel radiators provide optimum radiant comfort by providing heat evenly, gently and quietly. Runtal towel radiators are available in either self-contained electric models or hydronic models which integrate into a closed loop hot water heating system. Model types and sizes allow for variations in heat outputs that enable a towel radiator t o be a supplemental heater or the sole source of heat for a room. As a Towel Warmer: Each Runtal towel radiator is designed to maximize warming capacity by offering a large heated surface area. From a practical perspective, Runtal towel radiators help reduce mold and mildew and keep towels fresh between laundering. There are few sensations in the world which match the feel of a toasty towel or bathrobe after bathing. r\mtal RADIATORS Start enjoying the comfort of Runtal Radiators by calling 1-800-526-2621 or visit us online at www.runtalnorthamerica.com • SMART DESIGN arts and crafts A light-soaked kitchen reinterprets Craftsman style WRITTEN BY RACHEL YOUNG Rich tones are a staple of Craftsman-era kitchens. In this space, the richness comes from liberal use of natural stone and attention-grabbing copper accents. White-painted cabinets break the mold—oak is the traditional choice—and capitalize on the ample sun from two strikingly large arched windows. OPEN AND SHUT © A n open corner shelf flanked by narrow cabinets makes the most of an a w k w a r d orphan of space between two windows. Leaded glass doors reflect light but are opaque enough t o camouflage clutter. The arched w i n d o w frame a b u t t i n g cabinets on both sides extends the graceful curve. SMOOTH MOVE © An u n d e r m o u n t sink is w o r t h the slight extra expense for so many reasons: It looks more m o d e r n , it can be customized easily, and, best of all, crumbs and spills can be swept right i n t o the basin. And a j u t t i n g sink r i m w o u l d interrupt the visual f l o w of the granite. NICE VIEW © These w i n d o w s are userfriendly as w e l l as lovely thanks to hand cranks—in copper, of course. Casement w i n d o w s are a good idea for t i g h t spaces, and these also open up the kitchen t o the patio outside. Some judicious variation in the design of the cabinets adds visual rhythm to the kitchen—along with storage, of course. O LOOK INSIDE Switching from solid to glass-front cabinets is a great tedium buster, especially when the cabinets are white. The key is not overdoing the glass; an all-white scheme is stark, but mostly white is pleasant and clean. @ NOT A DIVIDER © MAKING CONTACT A tall upper cabinet with three drawers rests directly on the countertop. With its extended depth, it teams up with the base cabinet below to effectively function as a short section of wall. The shallow cupboard over the hood is far more valuable as a visual bridge than as storage. It unites the cabinets that flank the range, making it appear as though the hearth were tucked into a slot carved out of a oncesolid wall of cabinets. © OPEN FOR PLEASURE Like glass doors, open shelves break up the solid white, but their contents play more of an active visual role in the kitchen than those in glass-front cabinets. Cookbooks advertise that this space was designed for a serious culinary aficionado. 3 0 ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS www.womansdav.com/specials side orders Vertical surfaces give this room character and add utility Windows galore bring a deluge of natural light into this expansive kitchen, but they also eat up potential storage space. In and around the cooking core, however, the designer took full advantage of every available spot to make the kitchen function and look fantastic. Instead, it features cabinets for both storage and decorative display. 0 WARM REGARDS Finding space for a warming drawer can be tough, but it's © RIDE THE RAIL © R E D FACED worth the effort. Kitchen designer Gioi Tran, of Applegate Tran Interiors, in San Francisco, worked with the homeowners to design a warm, contemporary room full of visual contrasts. ■ Q6A. ♦ WHAT INSPIRED THIS ARTSY KITCHEN? I looked at it like a 3-D art project, with negative and positive spaces, sculptural elements, and studies in line and form. The cabinets hang on the wall like sculpture. We played with the idea of line by doing the drawer pulls asymmetrically. Every element in the kitchen is connected to that vision. ♦ YOU USED GRANITE, MARBLE, STAINLESS STEEL, CONCRETE AND SEVERAL TYPES OF WOOD. WHY SUCH A VARIETY OF MATERIALS? The homeowners wanted lots of contrasts, like wood against stone, and light against dark. So w e did things like using light wood on the cabinets against dark w o o d on the floor. ♦ WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES OF DESIGNING SUCH A LARGE SPACE? Big islands can be barriers, so we had to think carefully about traffic flow for different scenarios such as two people cooking, kids in the kitchen, and entertaining. I created zones—a coffee zone (where the built-in coffeemaker is), a kids' zone (the stools at the island) and a prep zone (the island sink). Also, since it was an open floor plan, we chose quiet appliances, because you don't want a noisy dishwasher with guests in the living room. ♦ WHAT LESSONS CAN OTHER HOMEOWNERS LEARN FROM THIS SPACE? Regardless of the size of your kitchen and your budget, you need to think about the flow of the space. Even if you don't have room for multiple zones, you can make sure that all the elements are connected in a relationship that works for you. 4 6 ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS www.womansdav.com/sDccials ansgrohe k At W h o D o Y o u S h o w e r W i t h . c o m , we take a look at the light-hearted side of the topic w e love so much: the daily shower. From the hilarious to the evocative, what w e discovered with our photos a n d videos is that showering isn't just a daily chore that you have to do, it's actually pretty fun! • • PORTFOLIO This bright white Manhattan kitchen in a prewar building is packed with functionality—much of which is hidden behind elegant, sleek lines and beautiful finishes. The space was designed by Arthur Tanturri, of Chelsea Fine Custom Kitchens, for Frank Pizzo, his wife Linda Jessee, and their two young children. ...Q6A ♦ WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF DESIGNING THIS SPACE? To fit all of the appliances Frank and Linda requested into a small area and to get the look of a contemporary Italian kitchen in a very small space. We were grasping for inches. ♦ WHAT WERE SOME OF THE FAMILY'S SPECIAL REQUESTS? Linda cooks a lot, so she needed a large oven. Frank wanted a built-in coffeemaker for fresh-ground coffee every day. And with two kids, laundry was an issue, but the washer/dryer wouldn't fit in the bathroom. Fitting them into the kitchen was a tall order. ♦ WAS THERE ONE OVERRIDING DESIGN CONCEPT THAT YOU STUCK TO FOR THIS SPACE? We didn't want the appliances to show, because they have beautiful Italian furniture in the living room (the kitchen is open to the living room), and w e didn't want to detract from that. ♦ YOU HAVE A SMALL KITCHEN, TOO. HOW DO YOU PREVENT CLAUSTROPHOBIA? The kitchens in older buildings in New York City are rarely large. We've been very forward-thinking in adopting the open-plan living room/kitchen idea by knocking d o w n the wall between the rooms. If you're entertaining and you're sequestered in a tiny kitchen behind a wall, you're missing your own party. 4 8 ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS www.womansdav.com/sDccr.ils —»• Listen t o R a d i o W D , Woman's Day's N E W radio talk show, and you m a y W I N a n iMac computer. Gerard Ciccarello, C M K B D , of Covenant Kitchens, in Westbrook, Connecticut, turned a sleek, open kitchen with 9-foot ceilings into an inviting hub for a family of five. • Q6A. ♦ THERE'S A LOT OF COLOR HERE. WHY DID YOU MIX UP THE COLOR PALETTE? Using multiple colors adds a lot of interest. When done well, color can really show off a room and add warmth. Using distinct colors makes each piece stand out. ♦ HOW ELSE DID YOU MAKE THIS LARGE SPACE FEEL COZIER? The use of color, but also the architectural elements. We did an arch between the kitchen and family room. An arch is a classic element, and is pleasing to the eye, plus it brings down the ceiling height. We also used beadboard to get a more casual look, and w e played with the heights of the cabinets, too, which helps the space feel less boxy. The crown molding all the way around the room also helps bring the ceiling d o w n . ♦ HOW DO YOU FIND THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF DETAILS AND TOO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS GOING ON? You really have to go by the feel of the room. I like to use a mix of solid-door cabinets, glass-door cabinets and open cabinets. I think three makes a good balance, in general. Then you add splashes of interest around the room that play off each other. For example, w e added an arch above the range hood to mimic the entryway arch. ♦ WHAT'S BEHIND THE TREND OF MAKING KITCHEN APPLIANCES, CABINETS AND WORK ISLANDS LOOK LIKE FURNITURE? It's a way to layer in details, and it personalizes a space. But it should always make sense in the space, and relate to other things in the kitchen. 5 0 ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS www.womansdav.com/sDccials y M y K n o b s . c o m offers over 300,000 Decorative Cabinet Knobs and Pulls. This showplace kitchen, which he designed as part of his BeauxArts collection for German kitchen manufacturer SieMatic, is an example of how classic and modern can blend seamlessly together. ..Q6A. ♦ THERE'S A LOT GOING ON IN THIS SPACE. WHY DOES THIS KITCHEN WORK? It's a personality-driven kitchen, rather than something that stays within "the rules." People like something interesting in a kitchen, something with a mixed vocabulary, and this kitchen is a great example of that. ♦ YET IT STILL FEELS RESTRAINED. HOW DID YOU PULL IT OFF? We kept the palette classic and stuck to materials that have a long life, such as wood (light oak and maple) and some stainless steel elements. The white-lacquer finish brings a modern feel to the cabinets. We also used subtle contrasts in the cabinet styles and hardware, like the fine beaded cabinets with classic cup-handle pulls by the range set against the flat panel cabinets with more modern-looking pulls on the other side. ♦ WHAT ARE THE STANDOUT ELEMENTS OF THE KITCHEN? I love the hand-hewn Chinese wedding cabinet—it's actually an armoire that holds the fridge and freezer—and the way the rough quality of the wood blends with the smooth, white magnolia cabinets with modern drawers. ♦ IN A KITCHEN LIKE THIS, YOU MIGHT EXPECT TO SEE A TRENDIER COUNTERTOP. WHY GO WITH A CLASSIC LIKE GRANITE? The typical high-polished granite has been overused in kitchens for 30 years; nonetheless, granite is durable and beautiful, and we wanted to use it, so we had to rethink it. We did a brushed finish; it's an undulating finish, so it gives it a raw, organic stone quality—almost like slate. ♦ 5 2 ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS www.womansdav.com/sDccr.ils EASY CROWN 8 MOLDING Before Do it yourself with no tools! Which is exactly what the Chicago-based designer did, working with architect Arthur C Danielian, FAIA, of Danielian Associates Architecture+Planning in Irvine, California, who designed the family's two-level home to suit a lake side site, an easy drive from downtown Chicago. Having done t h a t , he arranged everything so t h a t he, a chef, could cook easily in the new kitchen. oo oo Down came interior walls, as rooms were reordered and the place took on the characteristics of a contemporary ranch house: open spaces, large lightadmitting windows, easy outdoor access. David even removed closets, jettisoning a pantry and a space that had contained the washer/dryer. He says no pantry was needed; he never uses packaged or pre pared foods. And he found a place for his laundry appliances in a corner of the attached garage. David wanted his kitchen to be a kind of dining theater, a place to entertain as well as work. Two walls were removed, opening the space up to the foyer and the adjacent dining room. At 120 square feet, the new kitchen, he says, "is roughly the size of the old one and in the same general part of the house, but it bears no resemblance to what had been there before." Its amenities are state-of-the-art but less than lavish, somewhat surprising considering this is the realm of a profes sional chef. Two ovens and a microwave 7 4 ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS www.womansday.com/specials are built into one wall; a six-burner cooktop resides in the island; and a dish washer sits next to a large undermount sink on a wall where a frameless win dow doubles as a backsplash. T h e only visual indication that this is the domain of a professional is the restaurant-style refrigerator/freezer. Custom cabinets are made ofwenge, an imported hardwood. Above the window, a row of wall cabinets has acrylic insets in the doors. "White linen was fused into the resin to add a textural element," David says. "I wanted dark wood for the cabi nets, but not too much of it. Having those translucent door panels lightens things up." Other contrasts include stainless steel countertops as well as appliances, plus a center island made of medium-density fiberboard that's been given a reddish orange lacquer finish. Over and above the wipeable surfaces, the abundant light and the inviting open-space plan, the single most important amenity, David says, is "maximum flexibility." And this kitchen certainly has it. ♦ SEE BUYING GUIDE FOR DETAILS Now that the kitchen is wide open it's become a performing space of sorts, a place to wow guests with tasty food. KITCHENS & BATHS • Adding a second island to this kitchen proves a sure bet for great storage 1 Chalk it up to growing pains. When interior designer Kiki Luthringshausen learned she was preg nant with her fourth child, she and husband Vincent Florack faced an important decision. Should they stay put and remodel their 10-year-old home, or flee the familiar west-Chicago suburb and buy a larger house some where else? Rather than uproot the family, the couple opted to remodel—with Kiki at the design helm. "I was ready for my dream kitchen," says the designer, a selfdescribed foodie and talented cook whose skill and creativity routinely dazzle family and friends. "After doing other people's kitchens for the past 11 years, it was time to do mine," she says. Inspired by the straightforward style that characterizes 19thcentury service kitchens, she created a symmetrical floor plan anchored by two islands. She then borrowed freely from the past: adopting a classic black-and-white palette, fitted floor-to-ceiling cabinets, no-nonsense stainless steel fixtures and ebony-stained hardwood floors. "I loved the look but wanted to make it my own," she says ofher decision to pair luxe materials—thick slabs of white Calcutta marble and ebony granite—with simple commercial appliances and fixtures like her favorite faucet, a practical prerinse model employed by restaurant kitchens. Eclectic decorative ele ments, including a pair of kitschy globe lights that illuminate the main island, also factor into the mix. One Size Fits All Bright and blond, this kitchen holds a crowd or a single cook with equal comfort WRITTEN BY NANCY A. RUHLING PHOTOGRAPHS BY J. SAVAGE GIBSON STYLED BY BRIAN CARTER The biggest challenge in most kitchen renovations is coaxing a small space to live and work large. John and Sue Wieland confronted the opposite scenario when they set out to update the design-challenged kitchen in their twostory 1933 Colonial-style home in the suburbs of Atlanta. Once the Wielands removed the wall that separated the vintage pantry from the principal food-prep space in the kitchen, a very spacious U-shaped area was revealed. Then, in collaboration with Atlanta-based designer Matthew D. Rao, C K D , they devised an inviting floor plan that put all of the room's 580 square feet to good use. The cork floor, which is easy on the feet, the back and the eyes, adds warmth to the room, and—important in openplan kitchens—cuts down on noise. The unadorned windows have been treated with UV-blocking film. iwomarisday.com/specials ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS 8 3 A six-burner c o o k t o p is surrounded by several different counter surface materials. WINE OVEN OVEN DW J o ooo ooo 21'x2V REF FRZ 0 DW ABOVE: Once merged w i t h an old butler's pantry, the kitchen faced the rare challenge of being t o o big. One way designer M a t t h e w Rao b r o u g h t it back into scale w a s by retaining the different ceiling heights in the r o o m . A key element of the design strategy was doubling up: The kitchen has two wine coolers, two sinks, two 27-inch ovens and a 6-foot-wide side-by-side commercial refrigerator/freezer that looks like two matching units. T h e overall design is simultane ously contemporary and classic design. Traditional-style cabinets in white oak team up with sleek stainless steel hard ware. The focal point is the 10V2-footlong, L-shaped central island, which houses a six-burner cooktop, a builtin steamer, a deep caterer's sink and breakfast bar and stools. "We used four levels and four different surface materi als—butcher-block, honed black granite, stainless steel and crystal-clear Starfire glass—to break things up," Rao says. "Because of this, the island doesn't appear nearly as big as it really is, and yet at par ties there's lots of room for the caterers to work and for guests to mingle." T h e central theme of pairs carries through to the cabinets. The steel-fronted appliance garages over the ovens, for example, are arranged in twos to evoke the feeling of an old-fashioned larder. "I chose to work with two-foot modules," Rao says, "because they create a comfort able scale and rhythm in the space. And I played with the dimensions of the cab inetry's recessed panels and made their frames wider to create interesting, more contemporary patterns." T h e Wielands report that because of the close attention that has been paid to the myriad design details, the kitchen, despite its size, has quickly become the heart of the home. "I entertain a lot dur ing the day—I have my book club over," Sue says. "Everybody likes to have parties at our house so they can hang out in the kitchen." That, John says, can be a small problem: "Nobody wants to go in any other room." ♦ wwYv.woman sday.com/specials ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS 8 5 WRITTEN BY NANCY A. For the 400-square-foot his-andher bathroom, Merrick Kitchen &. "The interior architecture was our guide," says Donny Crichton, owner of the firm. In addition, the sinks bump out, so the whole room has an in-and-out movement to it; it's not static and boring." He recalls that when his client said she wanted "a meditative environ ment—soothing and uplifting," he focused his redesign on opening up the space and adding diffused light. It's a sentiment she wisely subscribed to when undertaking her own project: refurbishing the century-old cottage she shares with husband, Michael Curley, and daughter, Grace, on Boston's North Shore. "I wanted a vintage look with a mod ern edge," Jane says. She stripped the lOxlO-foot room down to the studs, then reworked the layout, placing fixtures along perimeter walls to net space for a furniturelike vanity with his-and-hers grooming stations, a walk-in shower, separate soaking tub, toilet area and concealed washer/dryer unit. "We kept the footprint of the room, but changed everything else," she says. www.womansday.com/specials ULTIMATE KITCHENS & BATHS 9 9 Placing the antique-style " t e l e p h o n e " f i t t i n g on t h e side of the t u b — rather than at the end— guarantees no irksome head b u m p s during a relaxing soak. SEE BUYING GUIDE FOR DETAILS Although the subtle white-on-white palette suggests understated design, the room is full of surprises. T h e undisputed star is a double vanity that incorporates a problematic window, deliberately mis matched mirrors and a pair of unusual square basins Jane spied while scouting parts at a local plumbing supply store. "I knew I wanted a piece of furniture in the room," she says of the custom-built unit, which also provides storage. Despite obvi ous touches of luxury, "not everything has to match or be expensive," says Jane, whose sleuthing excursions are more apt to yield some quirky object or whimsical pairing that contributes to the room's charm and pleasing incongruity. As expected, texture has an important role in the space. Pale green walls the color of surf-pounded beach glass complement the all-white scheme. Creamy white sub way tiles and a honeycomb-patterned tile floor—grouted in a practical, dirtdisguising gray—hint at the past, yet are extremely hard wearing, an important consideration for a house so close to the sea. "I liked the crisp contrast of the gray Carrara marble against the white-tiled floor and brushed chrome fixtures," Jane says of her choices. A pair of windows admits welcome sea breezes and lends an open and airy feel ing to the intimate space. A freestanding rolled-edged tub is strategically situated to allow the occupant to truly relax and enjoy the outdoor view. The elegant tele phone-style fittings are mounted along the back wall, "so the tub spout doesn't poke you," Jane says. Above the tub, an expansive mirror of salvaged tin magnifies light, visually doubling the space. Jane splurged on the dressy treatment for the shower floor: tiny chips clipped from a slab of Carrara marble. She con ceded the impact was worth it. In fact, she admits that she loves everything about the elegant, well-edited space. "It's beautiful, peaceful, clean and well-designed," she says. "I wouldn't change one thing." ♦ RIGHT: The room is long on personality and, m o r e i m p o r t a n t l y , long on space, w i t h room for a doublew i d e vanity and separate t u b and shower areas. ^4 It's beautiful, peaceful and well designed.
